Fields of Mistria heart events are the character-story milestones that turn friendship with a marriage candidate into a longer personal route. In version 1.0, the standard progression uses heart events at 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 hearts. The 8-heart stage is especially important because it is where a normal candidate route can become Dating or remain platonic as Best Friends. If you choose Dating and continue to 10 hearts, the full-release romance system opens the Engagement Ring and proposal progression.
This page focuses on the shared heart-event system rather than reproducing every candidate's cutscene dialogue. For the full list of eligible partners, see Fields of Mistria Romanceable Characters. For the dating-to-marriage flow, use the Fields of Mistria Romance Options Guide. For daily relationship growth, use the Gifts Guide and Universal Likes Guide. Caldarus and Seridia have unusual story gates, so use their dedicated Caldarus and Seridia guides when needed.
Heart event levels at a glance
| Heart level | Friendship points | Main relationship milestone |
|---|---|---|
| 2 | 180 | First heart event for a standard marriage candidate |
| 4 | 390 | Second heart event; festival relationship options begin opening |
| 6 | 705 | Third heart event and deeper character story progression |
| 8 | 1,125 | Fourth heart event; romantic candidates can reach the Dating / Best Friends decision |
| 9 | 1,400 | Relationship-building stage between commitment and the final proposal milestone |
| 10 | 1,755 | Maximum heart level in 1.0; engagement becomes possible when dating |
NPC Studio officially raised the NPC heart cap to 10 hearts for version 1.0 and added 10 Heart (Proposal) Events, Wedding Events, Marriage, Children, engagement dialogue, and post-marriage routines. That makes older Early Access guides that stop at 6 or 8 hearts incomplete for the current game.
How Fields of Mistria heart events work
Hearts represent friendship progress, but reaching a number on the relationship meter is not the whole experience. Heart events are scripted character stories. They give you more context about a candidate's personality, work, family, worries, and relationships with the rest of Mistria. Later events generally assume you have already seen the earlier parts of that character's story, so completing the chain in order is the safest approach.
For standard marriage candidates, the major event thresholds are 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 hearts. When an event becomes available, pay attention to your mail, journal, request board, map markers, and the candidate's usual locations. Not every character uses exactly the same trigger. A guide that gives one universal building, hour, or weather condition for every candidate is therefore likely oversimplifying the system.
Dialogue choices inside heart events are primarily there to let you role-play the conversation. The important long-term relationship choice arrives later in the route, when the game distinguishes a romantic relationship from a platonic Best Friends outcome.
2-heart event: the first personal story
At 2 hearts, a standard marriage candidate reaches the first major personal event. This is usually the point where the relationship starts feeling different from ordinary town dialogue. Instead of simply learning a villager's daily schedule, you begin following a small storyline centered on that character.
If you have reached 2 hearts and nothing seems to happen, do not immediately assume the save is bugged. First check whether you have completed any earlier quest or introduction required for the character, then inspect your mail and journal. Some events are initiated differently from others, and story progression can matter for special characters.
The best early-game strategy is simple: talk to the character whenever convenient and give gifts that you know are liked or loved. There is no need to rush every candidate to 2 hearts at once unless you specifically want to see all character stories in parallel.
4-heart event: festivals and a closer friendship
Four hearts is an important social threshold beyond the second personal event. Current relationship documentation ties this stage to additional festival interactions, including the ability to invite an eligible character to relationship-focused festival moments once the relevant festival itself is available.
This is a useful planning point because festivals occur on fixed calendar dates. If you want a particular candidate for a festival interaction, start building hearts before the event week rather than trying to make up the entire relationship meter on the final day.
A reliable routine is more useful than hoarding one rare item: speak to the NPC regularly, give good gifts, complete relevant requests, and keep an eye on the next event trigger. If you are working on March specifically, the March Gifts Guide gives a character-specific gift route. Adeline has a separate Adeline Gifts Guide.
6-heart event: continue the character storyline
The 6-heart event is the third standard heart event. By this point, the candidate's story has usually developed across several scenes, so players who jump into an old walkthrough midway through the chain can easily confuse an earlier objective with the current one.
Complete the events in sequence. If a 6-heart scene is not appearing even though the meter has passed the threshold, verify that the 2-heart and 4-heart events are actually complete. Then check the journal and any location or story requirements associated with that candidate.
Caldarus is an important exception to the normal pattern. His early hearts are tied closely to the Mines seal and tablet storyline rather than functioning like the standard town candidates. That is why a generic 2/4/6-heart checklist should not be copied directly onto his route.
8-heart event: Dating or Best Friends
Eight hearts is the biggest decision point before engagement. For a normal romance route, this is where the relationship can move toward Dating. The alternative is a platonic Best Friends route.
This choice matters because reaching 10 hearts by itself is not enough to make every friendship an engagement. NPC Studio's 1.0 notes specifically describe the Engagement Ring as becoming craftable after reaching 10 hearts with an NPC you're dating. In other words, the romantic status established earlier in the route is part of the requirement.
Dating also opens additional relationship content rather than simply changing a label in the menu. You can continue raising hearts, experience dates and romantic dialogue, and work toward the 10-heart proposal stage. Players who prefer a platonic relationship can follow the Best Friends branch instead.
If you intend to marry a candidate, make sure you understand the 8-heart choice before confirming it. Do not rely on an Early Access guide written before the dating system and full marriage progression were implemented.
9 hearts: progress toward the proposal stage
There is no standard numbered heart event at 9 hearts in the shared progression table. Think of this stage as the final stretch between the 8-heart relationship decision and the 10-heart engagement milestone. Keep talking to your partner, giving appropriate gifts, and using the dating content available to you.
This distinction is useful for searchers who see a 9-heart meter and assume they have missed a cutscene. The standard event milestones remain 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10. A candidate can have dialogue and other relationship content between those thresholds without every heart number representing another universal heart event.
10-heart event: Engagement Ring and proposal
Version 1.0 turns 10 hearts into the final shared romance milestone. NPC Studio's official patch notes state that the Engagement Ring becomes craftable at a Forge after you reach 10 hearts with an NPC you are dating. Elsie delivers the recipe the following morning, and using the recipe scroll unlocks the craft.
The ring has an unusually player-friendly function. The official notes say 10-heart proposal events can be retriggered with the Engagement Ring until you actually choose to propose and become engaged. This means you can view eligible proposal events and collect their NPC Special Items before making the final commitment if that is how you want to play.
For the exact ring recipe and Dragon-Forged Core requirements, continue to the Engagement Ring Guide. Once you are ready to commit, the Marriage Guide covers wedding dates, planning, spouse routines, and the post-wedding sequence.
Can you date multiple characters before marriage?
The 1.0 system accounts for players who have Dating status with more than one NPC. By default, when you become engaged, other characters you were dating change to Best Friends. NPC Studio also added a gameplay setting that can disable those automatic break-ups/status changes. The setting becomes available through the engagement tutorial cutscene and needs to be toggled before the engagement is confirmed if you want that behavior changed.
That makes engagement the real commitment boundary. You can explore romance routes before that point, but you should check the engagement setting before confirming your final proposal if you have several active Dating relationships.
How to raise hearts efficiently
You do not need a complicated min-max route for ordinary play. Consistency is enough:
- Talk to the candidate regularly. Current community documentation lists a daily conversation as a source of friendship points.
- Give one gift per day when practical. Loved and liked gifts move the relationship faster than neutral gifts. Use the Gifts Guide for the full system.
- Use birthdays well. A character's birthday is an especially valuable time to bring a strong gift.
- Complete requests and character content. These help you engage with the NPC's story rather than treating romance as a gift-spamming meter.
- Finish heart events in order. If a later milestone is not triggering, verify earlier events before grinding more gifts.
- Use dates after choosing Dating. They are part of the current romance system and give you more relationship content on the road to 10 hearts.
Friendship points do not need to be earned in one season. If you miss a festival interaction or take a break from a candidate, you can continue building the relationship later.
Why a heart event may not trigger
When an event appears to be missing, work through these checks before assuming a bug:
- Confirm the candidate has actually reached the required heart threshold.
- Make sure all earlier heart events in that character's chain are complete.
- Check your mailbox, journal, quest objectives, and request board.
- Visit the location indicated by the current objective rather than relying on an old guide's trigger location.
- Consider weather, time, festival days, and story progression if the event has additional conditions.
- For Caldarus or Seridia, remember that their special story progression does not map perfectly onto the early standard-candidate pattern.
- Make sure the guide you are using was updated for version 1.0 rather than an Early Access heart cap.
The last point causes a lot of confusion. Fields of Mistria's romance system changed substantially at full release, so search results written when 6 or 8 hearts were the practical endpoint may still rank even though their progression advice is incomplete.
Heart events vs. the full romance route
It helps to separate three related search intents. Heart events are the personal story scenes at relationship milestones. Romance options describes how Dating, engagement, proposal, wedding, and marriage work. Romanceable characters answers who the 12 eligible partners are.
Keeping those topics separate also makes planning easier:
- Use this page when an event will not trigger or you need the 2/4/6/8/10-heart structure.
- Use Romanceable Characters when choosing among the 12 candidates.
- Use the Romance Options Guide when you are ready to date.
- Use the Marriage Guide when you are ready to propose and plan the wedding.
- Use Caldarus or Seridia when following the story-gated secret-candidate routes.

Frequently asked questions
What heart levels have heart events in Fields of Mistria?
For standard marriage candidates, the shared progression uses heart events at 2, 4, 6, 8, and 10 hearts. The 10-heart stage is part of the version 1.0 proposal progression.
What happens at 8 hearts?
Eight hearts is the key relationship-choice stage. A romanceable character's route can move into Dating, while the platonic alternative is Best Friends. Dating is required for the standard 10-heart engagement path.
What happens at 10 hearts?
Ten hearts is the current NPC heart cap. If you reach it with a character you are dating, the Engagement Ring recipe becomes available through Elsie the next morning. The ring is crafted at a Forge and is used for the proposal-event progression.
Can I see more than one 10-heart proposal event before choosing a spouse?
Yes. NPC Studio's 1.0 patch notes explicitly say eligible 10-heart events can be retriggered with the Engagement Ring until you choose to propose and become engaged, allowing you to see events and collect NPC Special Items first.
Why is Caldarus different from other heart-event routes?
His early relationship progression is tied to major Mines seal/tablet story milestones, so his early hearts do not behave exactly like the standard 2/4/6-heart candidate chain. Follow the dedicated Caldarus guide for that route.
